Arsenal Seek Essential Win over Swansea

Arsene Wenger has demanded a response from his Arsenal team as the club welcomes Welsh outfit Swansea to the Emirates in the Premier League.

After the weekend´s humiliation at Chelsea the Gunners need to claim a win tonight or risk slipping out of the title race. Worse than that, anything but three points against a struggling Swans could see the club scrapping to stay in the Top 4 and the coveted Champions League places. An indifferent patch of form by Arsenal has seen them swamped by title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool. However, after a great first half of the season, a confident display here will keep the team in the thick of it as a title contender.

Wenger will know that a win at home is essential as he eyes this weekend´s clash with title rivals Manchester City, while also needing to play Everton in the next few weeks. It is a vitally important end to March for the club and a strong points return from the next three Premier League games will likely tell us a lot about where Arsenal will finish come May.

Disappointingly for the manager, he started arguably his best available 11 on Saturday and was already on the way to a crushing defeat before Kieran Gibbs was (wrongly) sent off against Chelsea. The Frenchman could swing the axe on some underperformers from Stamford Bridge, especially as some key men will undoubtedly be rested for Man City on the weekend.

Yaya Sonogo is likely to be drafted in to replace Olivier Giroud in attack, while Kim Kallstrom could make his first start since joining the club on loan in January. Lukaz Fabianski could also be named goalkeeper, but whoever plays against Swansea, a win has become hugely important.

Arsenal Embarrassed as Chelsea Score six

Arsene Wenger will certainly remember his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal, but unfortunately it will be for all the wrong reasons as the Gunners crashed to a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Travelling to Stamford Bridge to play league leaders Chelsea was a difficult prospect for title chasing Arsenal, but the capitulation is devastating for the fans and for the club´s season. It now looks unlikely that the team will lift the Premier League trophy, with Chelsea, Man City, and Liverpool all now above Arsenal in the league.

Some will argue that the game could have been different if Kieran Gibbs had not been wrongly sent off in the 15th minute. However, the sad and worrying truth is Chelsea was much the better team before that (leading 2-0) and were romping to victory anyway. The Blues opened the scoring in the 5th minute through Samuel Eto´o and then doubled the advantage thanks to Andre Schurrle in the 7th minute.

The defining decision of the game arrived in the 15th minute when Edin Hazard´s goal bound shot was pushed wide by the hand of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It was a stone wall penalty but inexplicably referee Andrew Mariner sent off Kieran Gibbs on accident. It was an astonishing mistake by the official, but nevertheless Arsenal were rightly down to 10 men.

Hazard slotted the penalty passed a disappointing Wojciech Szczesny and Chelsea never looked back, adding another before half time and another two goals in the second half. The Gunners still have a chance to win the Premier League, but the team will now have to be wary in an attempt to secure 4th place. While the title is still in sight, it seems unlikely considering the players seem unable to beat a direct title rival. It is worrying that Arsenal has lost 5-1 to Liverpool and 6-0 to Chelsea in recent weeks, suggesting a lack of quality in the squad. With Man City still to come, that will now be the next defining game for the club.

Arsenal looking to cut Chelsea down Today

Arsenal makes the short journey across London to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend. This huge match is not just a London Derby between two of the best teams in England, it is also a clash that could help to decide who wins the Premier League this season.

Chelsea currently leads the pack in first place, but victory for Arsenal at the Bridge will put the Gunners within two points with a game in hand. However, if the team slips to defeat against a functional Chelsea then winning the Premier League this season may be beyond the team. The question is can Arsenal travel to Chelsea and claim the three points?

Recent poor form suggests the going could get tough for the Gunners today, but Chelsea has had a few slips lately too, such as last week´s defeat by Aston Villa. There is no love lost between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho and both would love to secure what could be a defining win. The truth is though that both managers would likely settle for a draw.

Wenger will be tempted to stick with the same eleven that picked up a resilient win over Spurs last week. Resilience will certainly be needed against a well oiled Chelsea team, but the Blues remain without a potent striker and Arsenal will be looking to exploit that fact.

The Arsenal fans though want to get the three points that will once again prove the club´s title credentials this season, and what a fitting occasion it will be. The match will be Wenger´s 1000th in charge of Arsenal and the plaudits have been flooding in from across the football world for what is an amazing achievement.

The Arsenal faithful may question Wenger´s motives in recent years, but they also acknowledge his immense influence on the club as a whole. A win against Chelsea today would be the perfect way to celebrate Wenger´s millennium celebrations.

Injuries Cripple Arsenal´s Title Bid

Since Arsenal last won a trophy (the FA Cup in 2005) the club has gone close on several occasions, but as they say, close but no cigar. Over the last few seasons each trophy charge by the Gunners has typically ended with the team slipping at the last hurdle due to pressure and lack of quality. The team´s mental strength has been questioned regularly over the years, as has Arsene Wenger´s.

However, as we have been saying on these pages, there is a difference in the Arsenal players this season, and in the way the team is approaching the campaign. There is definitely a renewed mental strength present (in fact the team has always finished the season strongly, but the critics ignore this). So the question becomes if Arsenal´s mental strength has improved (it has) then why are the team still in a similar position as the one they find themselves in at this time of the year most seasons (out of the Champions League and trailing in the Premier League)?

Well, according to Arsene Wenger it is because of unfavorable injuries. Speaking to The Guardian the Frenchman said.

“If you look at our overall injury list going into such a decisive part of the season, we have no Wilshere, Ozil, Ramsey and we went to Bayern without Gibbs and Monreal.

“It’s very difficult to find an obvious reason why.”

Yes, all teams do have injuries, but Arsenal´s seem to happen to key players at critical parts of the season. Aaron Ramsey was a driving force to the Gunners reaching the top of the league earlier in the campaign, but now the Welsh midfielder has been missing for months. Theo Walcott returned from injury and was in the goals, so much so that Wenger held off buying a striker in January. Unfortunately Walcott got injured and now sits out the season.

Add these two long term absentees to consistent niggles to the likes of Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere then it is easy to see why the team is faltering of late. However, with a better squad and a stronger mentality, Arsenal is now poised to win the FA Cup, anything less would be a disaster.

So if you are looking for some reason as to why the Premier League charge is stuttering then look no further than the injury table.

Arsenal Proved which Club dominates North London

Arsenal claimed yet another derby win after a tussle with long suffering Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. Once again the Gunners proved which club dominates the football landscape in North London, but this time Tottenham provided a stern test.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will no doubt be delighted that his charges withstood spells of severe pressure but still saw out the 1-0 win. It was certainly not the typical Arsenal win, but again the players proved that this team can mix it up and also has a good mental attitude. Whether that will be enough to win the league is another matter, although the club once again moves into the thick of the title race, sitting four points behind leaders Chelsea with a game in hand.

The ultimately decisive goal took just 72 seconds to arrive when Wenger´s decision to restore Thomas Rosicky to the starting lineup paid off. The Czech international has recently signed a new contract with the club and celebrated with the winning goal against arch rivals Spurs. Rosicky was the architect of his goal as he burst into the Spurs half and played a one two with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Finding himself on the corner of the area Rosicky fired a pinpoint shot past the flailing Hugo Lloris to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead.

That lead would prove the difference after 90 minutes, but in the meantime Tottenham put Arsenal under pressure throughout, and on the face of it should have had more from the game. The home team had 17 shots but could only get 2 on target in a frustrating afternoon for Tim Sherwood´s men.

Tottenham´s command of the game hardly mattered to Arsenal as the team put in a fine defensive display that was epitomized by Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the defense. Despite huffing and puffing, Spurs never looked like blowing the Arsenal house down, and the Gunners left with three points and a Premier League challenge back on.

Arsenal clash with Spurs in North London Derby

The North London Derby will spark into life on Sunday as Arsenal travel the short distance to White Hart Lane to challenge bitter foes Tottenham Hotspur.

The two meet knowing that defeat in this match could have dire consequences for the remainder of the season, and could even end current Premier League ambitions. For Tottenham, a win is needed to maintain the charge for fourth place and a Champions League place, the requirement set out at the start of the season after a summer of big spending.

Arsenal currently holds fourth place, but the club´s and manager Arsene Wenger´s ambitions lie beyond merely qualifying for the Champions League, although that is the minimum requirement. The Gunners look strong favourites for that fourth place (six points ahead of Spurs with a game in hand) but the players will have their sights set on the title still.

That looks more of a long shot than it did a month ago. Then Arsenal sat atop the league, but since the team has endured frustrating league form that has seen them slip to fourth, seven points behind leaders Chelsea (albeit with this game in hand). Injuries to key men at important points of the season seem to have hampered a mentally improved Arsenal this season, and it does look as though the Premier League trophy is out of reach.

However, the outlook for the remainder of the campaign is surprisingly upbeat considering the club´s league attempt has faltered and they have been knocked out of the Champions League. The FA Cup is Arsenal´s to lose and the fighting way the team left Europe provided a much needed shot of confidence. It looks as though the 8 year trophy drought could end this season, and if the team can defeat Tottenham and all but secure 4th place, the rest of the season can be spent chasing the FA Cup and an unlikely Premier League title.

Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood laid into his highly paid stars last week and questioned their commitment to the cause. That was a brave or stupid move, depending on how you look at it, and all eyes will be on the Spurs players to see if they back their manager on the pitch. The pressure is all on the home side here, with the club needing a win against Arsenal. However, expect the Gunners once again to have too much class for their North London rivals.

Arsenal Leaves Champions League after Solid Effort against Bayern Munich

Arsenal´s Champions League adventure came to an end at the hands of Bayern Munich for the second year in succession. However, the Gunners managed to crash out with pride and dignity very much intact after leaving the Allianz arena with a 1-1 draw. That was not quite enough to secure progress as the 2-0 first leg in Bayern´s favour proved to be the difference between the clubs.

While the score line managed to keep Arsenal´s confidence intact there is little doubt that the German and current European champions were the better team. The hosts put Arsenal against a wall of passing and invention during the first half from which the North London club could not escape. However, Bayern´s obvious quality did not produce a goal and Arsene Wenger´s men went in at half time with a slim chance.

Wenger had named five across midfield to match Bayern, but the likes of Mesut Ozil and the inform Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were stifled by the Munich carousel. As was Oliver Giroud, recalled to the starting lineup after a brace on the weekend. The Frenchman found chances few and far between and was left a spectator for much of the game as Bayern continued to press the Arsenal goal.

Any hopes of the tie being within reach after halftime were quickly dashed as Bastian Schweinsteiger swept a Frank Ribery cross into the Arsenal goal on the 55th minute. The Gunners of old would have crumbled under such adversity, but this Arsenal team has shown a renewed mental strength this season. It took the players just two minutes to respond when Lukas Podolski fired in an equalizer in the 57th minute.

With Arsenal finally scoring a goal in this tie the dedicated fans that had travelled to Germany may have thought it would drive the team on. That may well have been the case, but this Munich team is simply too good at the moment and the Germans continued to dominate the game. The home team could have snatched a winner when Laurent Koscielny fouled Arjen Robben in the box and a penalty was awarded. Luckily stand-in keeper Lukas Fabianski saved Thomas Muller´s penalty to allow Arsenal to leave with a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal looking for an unlikely win against Bayern

What a rollercoaster few weeks it has been for Arsenal, and now the club faces the toughest clash of the season as the players travel to Germany to take on Bayern Munich.

The current German, European, and World champions are in formidable form and hold a 2-0 advantage heading into this second leg after cruising to an easy win at the Emirate 2 weeks ago. On that occasion Arsenal had Wojciech Szczęsny sent off in the first half, but this time manager Arsene Wenger will be hoping to keep all eleven men on the pitch while also using last year as a barometer.

The Gunners trailed Bayern 3-1 at this stage of the competition last year and went to the Allianz Arena and took a 2-0. That was not enough to qualify, but an equal result this time would be enough to take the tie to extra time. The players have the quality and stranger things have certainly happened in football, but of course Bayern are arguably the best team in the world.

Arsene Wenger had the luxury of resting key men on Saturday as he watched his players win 4-1 against Everton to reach the FA Cup semi final. Oliver Giroud will likely come back into the team after his late show double on Saturday, while the glimpses of form from Mesut Ozil will encourage those inside the club and the fans.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that Bayern Munich posses the players to hurt Arsenal and the game will have to be approached with caution. It is interesting that many are writing off Arsenal´s chances in this match, but make no mistake Arsenal can win this and progress. It is unlikely, but don´t bet against this team and its growing mentality.

Arsenal through to FA Cup Semifinal

Arsenal overcame a tricky FA Cup quarterfinal in style by beating Everton 4-1 to progress to the semi-final stage. The Gunners looked comfortable, especially during a classy second half which put the match beyond reach.

Mesut Ozil showed glimpses of a return to form and it was the German who opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a sliding shot past Everton stopper Joel. Arsenal continued to press after the goal, but the visitors remained a constant threat and kept the hosts busy in the final third. The ever dangerous Romelu Lukaka grabbed an equalizer for Everton on 32 minutes when he netted after an impressive run and cross from supposed Arsenal target Ross Barkley.

The first half had been end to end and a good old fashioned exciting FA Cup tie, and after 45 minutes it was anybody´s game. The second period started in much the same way, with Arsenal and Everton going close on several occasions. However, it was the Gunners who broke the pattern to retake the lead and take command of the match.

Everton midfielder Gareth Barry tripped Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the box and a penalty was awarded, with Mikel Arteta stepping up to slot home for a 2-1 lead. The home team continued to look the most likely and the addition of Oliver Giroud from the bench proved decisive. The Frenchman arrived late in the game and added a third in the 83rd minute and then a fourth two minutes later.

Arsene Wenger was delighted that his troops won and progressed to a Wembley semifinal. A trophy is in sight for the manager after years of waiting, while he also said after the game that the team could use the confidence boosting win in their pursuit of the Premier League title.

Arsenal tackle Everton with eye on Cup

Everton will visit the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal attempt to reach the semifinals of the FA Cup. After a rocky few weeks, the team will face a stern test from an Everton team that is in solid form leading into the match.

Arsenal´s season is at the make or break stage as losses to Stoke City and Bayern Munich have put the club on the verge of slipping out of the Champions League and the Premier League title race. Manager Arsene Wenger has promised to continue to fight on all fronts, but the Frenchman was eager to affirm this week that the FA Cup is a fantastic chance to win a trophy.

The Gunners are 10 time winners of the famed competition but have not lifted the Cup since 2004, adding further woe to the 8-year trophy drought. Arsenal has faced a tough path getting to this stage, seeing off North London rivals Tottenham, and then downing Coventry and Liverpool. Everton will provide a fresh challenge as the Merseyside club is thriving in the Premier League this season and is one of the surprise packages of the campaign.

However, Wenger will know that at home Arsenal´s destiny is in the hands of the players, although the six week injury to Jack Wilshere will hamper the manager´s midfield options. Everton tactician Roberto Martinez has his own injury problems with lynchpin defender Phil Jagielka out with a hamstring injury.

Whether a strong Arsenal team will be named is another matter, with the second leg of the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich next week. However, with the FA Cup representing a chance at a long awaited trophy, expect the Gunners to come out all guns blazing.
